What is lead qualification?
Lead qualification
Lead qualification is finding out whether someone who got in touch is a real fit, by checking their need, budget, timing and authority before you invest time.
Lead qualification means checking whether a new enquiry is worth pursuing before spending real time on it. Sales teams often use simple frameworks such as BANT: budget, authority, need and timing. Freelancers do the same thing informally when they ask about scope, dates and money in their first reply.
Done well, it saves both sides time: a poor fit hears no quickly and politely, and a good fit gets a proper conversation sooner. Done badly, it feels like an interrogation, or it happens too late, after an hour on a call.
Qualifying is not the same as turning away small budgets. The useful questions are the ones whose answers would change what you do next.
For example. Before booking a call, a consultant asks three things: what decision the client needs help with, by when, and whether there is a budget set aside for it.
