What is a discovery call?

Discovery call

A discovery call is a short first call between a potential client and a provider to understand the problem, the scope and the fit before any proposal or price.

A discovery call is the first proper conversation with a potential client, usually 15 to 30 minutes, held to understand what they need before writing a proposal. Consultants, agencies and freelancers use it to learn the goal, the constraints, the timing and who makes the decision.

It is valuable when the basics are already known and the call can go deeper. It is expensive when it is spent discovering that the budget is a tenth of what the work costs, which is why many people qualify a lead in writing first.

A common mistake is turning the call into a pitch. The client should do most of the talking; the provider’s job is to ask good questions and say honestly whether they are the right fit.
