What does human in the loop mean?

Human in the loop

Human in the loop means an AI system pauses for a person to approve its work at set points, so the decisions that matter are made by someone accountable.

Human in the loop describes AI systems that hand certain decisions to a person instead of acting alone. The AI does the routine work, such as drafting, sorting or settling details, and a human confirms the steps that carry real consequences.

It matters most where mistakes are costly or hard to undo: payments, contracts, medical or legal advice, anything that commits someone. Keeping a person in the loop also makes it clear who is responsible.

The trade-off is speed. A good setup asks for a person only where it counts, and lets that person loosen the rules over time, rather than asking about everything or nothing.
