What is an AI agent, in plain English?

AI agent

An AI agent is software built on an AI model that works toward a goal over several steps: it reads, decides what to do next, uses tools and acts, within limits.

An AI agent is a program that uses an AI model to work toward a goal instead of answering a single question. It can take several steps on its own: read what came in, decide what to do next, use a tool such as a calendar or a search, and act on the result.

The useful line is between answering and acting. A chatbot replies to the message in front of it. An agent keeps a goal in mind across messages and can do things, so the limits it works within matter as much as how capable it is.

Agents come in many kinds: coding agents, research agents, customer service agents, and personal agents that work for one person. What they share is a goal, a set of tools, and rules about what they may do without asking.

For example. Asked to find a time for a call, a chatbot suggests what to write. An agent checks its owner’s free and busy times, proposes two slots, and asks before it books one.

The agent you get on Yume is a personal AI agent: it works for you alone, lives at your own link, and always says it is an AI.
